How Switchee Participated in the Kickstart Scheme

The Kickstart Scheme is a great initiative that allows businesses to bring talented people into their teams for 6 months - how has it worked for Switchee?

The Kickstart Scheme is a great government initiative that allows businesses to bring talented people into their teams for a period of 6 months, with all of the associated onboarding and employment costs covered as part of the scheme.

With the announcement of the scheme, all of our teams were so excited to create roles that would inspire and attract young talented people into our organisation as well as help us get the valuable resources to continue executing the great work we do in this industry.

Our CEO, Tom Robins, is an ardent supporter of the scheme as he believes young people are the lifeblood of a business. In his own words, 'fresh eyes, brains, and challenges keep our ideas fresh and our work rewarding’. A sentiment I firmly agree with.

Getting through the initial stages of the process was not easy. We had to battle with the uncertainty of the rules of the scheme and the qualifying factors that would allow businesses like ours to recruit via the scheme. Our teams were rearing for the chance to bring new people on board, we were writing job specs, interview questions and onboarding processes. As with any newly implemented scheme, there were several teething issues to work through.

Thanks to our friends over at Tempo, we were able to get this unique project over the line. The platform connected us to JobCentres across the country in an effort to find suitable candidates to take part in the Kickstarter campaign. Tempo worked tirelessly to connect young people with companies, like Switchee, who were eager to bring them on board. This was a great win for us with Tempo taking charge of the legalities and paperwork.

We went one step further that the so-called “on the job training” provides and partnered with Hundo. Hundo also helps connect graduates to a large community of startups, helping them explore potential career options and allowing them to be seen by other companies in case they decide to pursue other opportunities after their initial 6-month contract.. The first step is to kickstart their career with essential work experience and the next is to allow them a chance to be “seen” by other companies, may they wish to continue their journeys elsewhere after the 6 months of working with us.

We have curated five new roles that will sit within our Marketing, Operations and Customer Success departments and once those roles went live we were blown away by the great people we've met! We are delighted to announce that we have already filled two out of our five available roles.

We were thrilled to have Lauren Grimes join us as a PR & Content Marketing Executive and Nicole Elliott join us as a Business Analyst. They have brought so much positive energy with them and have so far been smashing through their work tasks. We could not be happier with this result!

But our work is not over yet! We still have two Customer Operations Representatives vacancies and one Customer Success Executive role that need to be filled. However, we are optimistic that we will soon find the perfect candidates for these positions, someone who will love our team and choose to join our cause.

For businesses who are apprehensive about investing their time and energy into the Kickstart scheme, we hope our experiences will encourage them to seize the opportunity! This new scheme is a brilliant way to provide passionate and hardworking young people with essential work experience. We are proud to be taking part and doing our bit to nurture the new wave of talent for years to come.
